Apple MacBook Out Does It’s Recent Predecessors

Filed under: Laptops — KristiAmbrose @ 12:00 am

Apple is constantly coming out with the newest technology including media players, mp3 players, and smart phones. One of their newest creations is the MacBook. This product specifically was made to replace the iBook G4 series, and was released in 2006. Since then there have been several revisions to the MacBook as well as several different “generations.” This laptop is made especially for mac users obviously, but there are other people that have been PC users their entire lives and have bought into the Mac family. I’m not sure I would buy a mac only because I’m a PC girl at heart, but I just might reconsider it after all the hype Apple has received! The MacBook family comprises of several different versions. Thus far the newest and most updated MacBook was released in 2008 and uses a GM965 chip with Intel’s x3100 graphics.

The following MacBooks are the different versions available to the consumers:

MacBook -
Consumer Notebook
13.3″ screen with polycarbonate casings

MacBook Air -
13.3″ wide screen LED display

Ultralight Notebook -
13.3″ screen with aluminum casings

Professional Level Notebook -
15.4″ or 17″ screens with aluminum casings

Several different “options” are included with the Macs including iTunes, iWork, Customizations, iCal, iChat, etc. These products must be expensive if they offer all this right? Wrong! In fact, truth be told, if you go ahead and buy any of the Macs off Apple, then yes you will pay full price. But if you’re like every other person, you will want to find the best price even if it doesn’t come straight from the company that makes them. The best thing you can do is try places like EBay and Amazon. Hey listen, just because it’s from EBay or Amazon or some other auction site, doesn’t mean you are going to receive a cheap item. All this means is you will be saving yourself hundreds of dollars, and who doesn’t LOVE to save money?!?

Looking at the MacBook on Apple and then comparing it to one found on EBay (which is brand new, in the box, everything included) the price is quite different. MacBook on Apple is about $1,099 and on Ebay the lowest price is around $500. Now that is something you absolutely cannot beat. Again, just because you buy it on Ebay doesn’t mean its used. Now if you want to get it even cheaper, go ahead, buy it used or refurbished on Ebay. But if you are worrisome about the quality then get the “new still in box” one. Either way, your saving yourself a ton of money!

The History of Notebook Computers: A Breakthrough In The World of Technology

Filed under: Laptops — rwest @ 12:00 am

The world has seen many breakthroughs in technology and one of them is the history of notebook computers.

Notebook, laptop, call it what you may, these two words are synonymous with each other. The introduction of notebooks has shaken the world with its features and functionality. It is basically a portable computer with all the functions and features of a regular desktop computer compacted and developed to allow mobility.

Significant Dates In The History Of Notebook Computers

* In 1981, the very first notebook computer was introduced. The first notebook computers were classified as high profile gadgets due to the high cost of acquiring one.

* In 1983, IBM and Epson developed portable versions of the laptop in the market. Different models of the laptop emerged during this time, but the costs are still high that only the rich and professional businessmen can afford to buy them during that time.

* In 1995, Windows introduced the Windows 95 operating system that brought about the huge buzz in notebook computers. Windows 95 was the break that the masses are looking for. With its advanced features and the new operating system, the notebook computer was a sleeker and more compact version of the typical desktop computer. The price of notebooks dropped as more and more people wanted to buy one.

* One of the significant improvements in the history of notebook computers is the introduction of non-lead-acid batteries. Today’s notebooks come with lithium ion batteries that are more energy efficient.

* Power-saving notebooks have processors that allow data storage at a max. The new design and engineering structure of notebook processors made it possible to process as much data.

* Also sometime during the 90’s, liquid crystal displays or LCD monitors were developed to provide sharper and crisper images.

* Thinner and more reliable hard disk drives were developed also in the 90’s. The 3.5″ HDD and 2.5″ HDD were developed to accommodate the ever-so-shrinking notebook computer. Nowadays we also have the flash or thumb drive if there’s a need for more data storage.

* Later in the 90’s, IBM-PC notebooks have built-in internal modems, standard and parallel ports. As early as 1997 to 1999, USB and WiFi were developed. Some notebooks even had built-in wireless broadband modem.

* Later improvements include the video camera and finger sensor features.

Perhaps it’s safe to say that the history of notebook computers is an on-going process as there are still developments being made to improve its features and function. And because of the convenience and mobility of notebook computers, plus the added high-tech features and affordability, many people are expected to use it in the future.

Used Laptops for Business: What to Look For

Filed under: Laptops — iwhcvd @ 12:00 am

Looking to buy a used laptop (or laptops) for your business needs? This can be a confusing endeavor at times. First, you need to find a laptop that fits the unique needs of business users. Then, you need to find a source of these cheap used laptops that you can trust. Even then, you may still worry about support and reliability. This article will help address these needs.

First, how do you find a laptop that works well for business users? Fortunately, business users aren’t gamers, so the requirements are straightforward. Since business is all about enhancing productivity, you want to find laptops that have all the most common productivity enhancing features.

The first of these is RAM. If you don’t have enough, you can’t be productive, period. Make sure your laptops have 1gb of memory or better. Anything lower will prove frustrating to use under real world business conditions.

The second most important features are the screen and the keyboard. Since these form your connection with the computer, it is essential that these work well. Look for solid feeling, full sized, durable keyboards. Try to find high resolution, easily visible screens. Laptops having these features will work much better than those without for business users.

Lastly, consider connectivity. Business users need to stay connected. Look for laptops that have wi-fi, Bluetooth, and other common connectivity interfaces. You can often buy PC cards to expand the connectivity options of your notebook, but getting them built in is generally easier.

So, where can you get these business laptops? One of the best ways to buy from companies that a liquidated their old stock. This way, you get business proven laptops at very low prices. Great places to buy these used business laptops include eBay and Craigslist, but there are other options if you look around. Try to find reputable sellers, though, to make sure you’re getting the best product.

Once you have your laptop, how do you make sure it is supported? This isn’t too much of an issue, in actuality. If you’ve purchased a reliable, high quality, business class laptop, you should find your issues will be quite low. In fact, the money you save buying used should far outweigh any additional support costs you might incur.

So, this should give you a basic idea of how you can find some used laptops for your business. Of course, there are more details to consider, but if you keep your common sense, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding some great deals on laptops that will serve your business well for years to come.

Pink Laptops - Every Girl’s Dream Come True

Filed under: Laptops — Cattie @ 12:00 am

We all remember Elle’s pink laptop in Legally Blonde - who didn’t wish for one! But back in that dark age of black, grey or white laptops only (2001), you would have to get your notebook customized if you wanted it pink. Not anymore! Most computer companies have realized that their customers are looking for style and color in addition to functionality when choosing a laptop and have started adding more and more color and design options for the notebooks.

Dell’s Studio series and the Inspiron 1420 comes in Flamingo Pink (and 6 other colors), the award-winning XPS M1330 and XPS M1350 in 4 (Flamingo Pink is one of them), and the Inspiron 1525 in 9 colors and 4 funky designs.

Sony’s VAIO series comes in a variety of pink shades: Sunset Pink, Glossy Pink, Blush Pink, Luxurious Rose Pink, Textured Cherry Blossom Pink and Glossy Cosmopolitan Pink.

Other pink laptops include the ASUS EeePC (which comes in 5 colors, one of them is Blush Pink), Q2 Designs T5550 Deluxe Notebook in a Blush Metallic or Fusion Pink, Affinity Technologies ZT Affinity Notebook in Pink, MSI PR200 Notebook in Pink, PIONEERPOS Pink Notebook and Dialogue Technology’s ULV U7600 in Pink.

Apple has yet to add a pink option (or any color besides white and black for that matter), so if you have your heart set on a pink MacBook, customization is your only option. But that’s easier than you would think; there are many companies out there who will customize your laptop in any color and/or design you can wish for. One of them is Colorware, Inc. You can buy your customized laptop directly from them, or send in one you already own. And they offer way more than laptops, you can get a customized mouse, iPhone, iPod, iMac, PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, Blackberry and HGTV screen from them. And if you want to go all out with the customization, they can also put a logo, or anything you design, on any of these devices.

If you want to treat yourself to something really fabulous (or maybe put it on your wish list for your birthday or any other important date coming up), check out the Tulip Ego Laptops. Made by Dutch company Ego Lifestyle B.V. and first introduced at the 2006 Milan Fashion Week, these incredibly stylish laptops with their rounded corners and chrome handles look more like a chic pocketbook than an actual, working laptop. This pricey gadget (they run about $5,000 for the basic leather design to over $350,000 for the diamond-encrusted edition) became available in the US in the fall of 2006 and is currently only available from Avant Gallery in Miami Beach. But should your travels take you to Europe, Asia or the Middle East, you’ll have the opportunity to shop for them in numerous stores.

Right now is a great time to shop for a new notebook - many companies offer “back to school” savings and you can get a fabulous pink laptop for less than $500. Sadly, I wasn’t able to find any deals on the Tulip Egos, but you never know - miracles do happen!

Used Notebook Computers: How Old is Too Old?

Filed under: Laptops — iwhcvd @ 12:00 am

Looking at getting a really cheap notebook computer? You can save a lot by buying an older used model. However, if you go too old, you won’t be able to do much with the computer, as it will be too slow. You need to find a nice happy medium for your needs.

So, how do you make sure that you have enough laptop for your needs? Let’s start off with some base guidelines, and work up from their to see how much you need. First of all, if you’re going to be running Window’s XP (which you most likely do), you’ll want to get a computer with at least 512 megabytes of RAM. The same applies to Apple OS X. If you plan on installing a lightweight Linux distribution on your laptop, then you can go with a little less, but more is always better.

As for the processor, most anything above 1 Ghz will work, though not at extremely high levels of performance. Stay away from the Celeron processors, though,as these tend to be much slower than you would expect for their given clockspeed. Also, keep in mind that some older processor (Pentium 4s in particular) would burn through the battery quite fast. In these cases, you might be better going with either an older, cooler processor, or a newer, high efficiency model.

Screens have also improved with age. Try to find a screen that has a resolution of 1024×768, at the very least. Anything lower than this will be useless to you. Also, make sure that you’re getting an adequately sized screen for your needs.

When it comes to other parts of the computer, things will really start depending on your individual needs. You’ll probably want at least a CD drive, though many will also want a DVD drive. Gamers will need some sort of onboard, dedicated graphics to play even the most rudimentary 3D games well. Mobile users who want internet should look for built in wi-fi, though if this isn’t available, you can usually buy a PC card wi-fi adapter that will do the job quite well.

So, this should give you a good base line to go off of when looking for a used notebook computer. You may not end up with the flashiest computer out there, but if you’re needs are mainly constrained to internet/e-mail/office style tasks, you can get away with a much older used notebook computer then you might otherwise be able to.

Why Rent A Laptop When You Can Buy One Cheap?

Filed under: Laptops — mdofpc @ 12:00 am

People confuse computer renting with leasing. Renting is short term in nature and is very flexible. You can extend the rental or cancel at any time. Leasing, like buying, can’t be canceled without a severe penalty once you have committed. Leasing is a fixed arrangement. Renting is totally flexible.

If you plan to use a particular computer for just a few days or weeks, computer rental is definitely the right choice. However, there are other reasons to rent.

Many individuals find that computer rental is a low cost option to purchasing and owning a computer.

The value of renting depends on the need you have right now versus the need you will have in the future. If it’s a short-term need, rent.

You may need many computers for a very short time. Computer rental companies can set up an entire classroom of computers and let you focus on your training program.

Renting gives you the advantage of having various related products and services tailored to your very specific needs.

You can get the exact computer you need as well as any back-up services you may need.

If you are traveling, you don’t have to lug your expensive and awkward computer with you. Your computer rental company can have any technology preconfigured and tested, waiting for you at your at destination.

Temporary employees need temporary technology. Many computer rental companies will coordinate the installation and removal of computers, printers and other technology for any period of time specified.

Regardless of your need, it makes good sense to shop around for the right deal. Computer rental services can be found through the Internet as well as in most urban areas.

A Quick Guide to Renting Computer Displays

Most meetings today involve a computer at some point. These are the questions you need to have answered in advance if you will be renting computer equipment.

What kind of computer will you be using?
What is the computer’s resolution?
Will you be showing a video?
Will you be using transparencies?
Will you be using slides?
How big is the room you’ll be using?
How many people will be attending the meeting?
Is darkening the room possible?

If you’re using a laptop, make sure you know how to activate its monitor output. Newer laptops can be programmed in the Windows setup to have the monitor output activated at all times. Others might have a command such as Function-F5 to activate the monitor output. Be sure to try this before your meeting begins.

The last thing you need is to start your meeting without testing your equipment. How many times have you been frustrated when you had to sit through a 30 minute IT explanation from one of your co-workers who didn’t do their homework.

Always be prepared, especially if you are renting equipment. You need to familiarize yourself to your new tools so your presentation or meeting will run smoothly. Don’t assume that everything is working properly or you might be embarrassed.

Buying The Right Notebook

The single most important reason anyone buys a notebook is for portability. This is something that you can take anywhere. If you frequently travel in your work, you need a notebook. If you are a student going back and forth to the university, you need a notebook. If you are journalist traveling the world and submitting articles, you need a notebook. And today’s notebooks can be as powerful as most desktops with dual processors, large capacity internal drives, and other attractive features. But which one is right for you? How do you determine what type of notebook will fit your current needs plus allow you to expand for the future?

And the first part of the answer to the question of which one is right for you leads to a half-answer: it depends. It depends on what you are going to do with the computer. Are you going to use it for work or recreation? Is it something needed for your profession or are you a hobbyist? Do you play a lot of games? What level of internet access do you need? It is also important to remember that unlike desktop models, notebook computers cannot be upgraded easily. In fact, they usually have no upgrade path so you should take the time to get exactly what you need in terms of features and performance.

One characteristic of a notebook computer one should consider is the screen size. If you need to be able to have a lot of landscape for projects you are working on then consider a wider screen. Screen sizes usually can range from 10.4 inches to 17.1 inches. If you do a lot of work on an airliner in economy class, you are probably better off with a smaller screen size (because of the reclining seatbacks in front of you). Also a smaller notebook is just easier and lighter to carry around. Some who do presentations with their notebook computers will benefit from larger screen sizes such as those that use the newer WXGA technology. WXGA notebook screens can achieve resolutions up to 1366 by 768 pixels.

Battery life in your notebook computer is very important too. If you move around quite a bit, you might want to consider buying a notebook with not only a long lasting battery (most go 2-3 hours), but also one where buying a spare battery is not very expensive. One very inexpensive solution for the battery problem is to buy an external universal battery that can last up to 3-4 hours.

Another feature you need to consider when buying a notebook is internet connectivity. You will find that a popular way for people to work these days is with a wifi-enabled notebook at a wireless hotspot (such as in coffee shops, restaurants, libraries and airports). If you are buying an older used notebook, you may have to get an additional wifi-card if you want to have the mobile connectivity provided by this technology. Also, you will find that most hotels nowadays offer high-speed internet access but it is usually through a wifi connection.

And lastly, you need to consider what other options you want for your notebook computer. Do you want a CD writer or will you need to record DVDs? Do you need premium sound? How large of a disk drive do you need? When it comes to disk space, CD/DVD writers, sound cards, memory, and processor speed, it’s best to get it now as opposed to get it later. Here is the reason: The upgrade path for most laptops and notebooks is not very long. This is because notebooks are probably replaced every 2-3 years. They are quick becoming just as expendable as a set of tires for your car. And if you do not maximize on memory and processor speed, your notebook may not able run efficiently the new application and game software. The more your notebook is adaptable to software upgrades, the longer it will be an effective tool for you.

Notebook As A Tool Of Time Management

Notebooks have emerged as a bare essential for the business executives who carry their work along with themselves. Notebooks which are also known as laptops can facilitate the work process thereby saving substantial and valuable time. In short, it is used as tool of time management.

Owning a notebook is a dream of many, but since it is very expensive nobody buys it unless it is indispensable to them. However, some people having shoe-string budget look for a good notebook. They are the ones who need detailed and comprehensive information on notebooks and laptops before they settle for one.

Basically, buying a notebook or laptop largely depends upon the personal choice, specific requirement and social status of a person. Besides, different manufacturers are introducing notebooks of different look with a wide-range of features. However, some notebooks are launched in the market to cater to a particular segment of buyers keeping in mind of their specific needs. Accordingly, these laptops differ in flavor, class and quality.

Let`s take a look at the various types of notebooks that are available in the market today. Keeping various factors in consideration the notebooks can be broadly divided into four major categories, such as:

Budget laptops - Typically, these laptops cost around US$ 1000 to $ 1200.

Mid-range laptops - Notebooks of this category can be found with a price-tag of about US$1200 to $1600.

Ultra-portable laptops - These light-weight laptops ranges from US$1600 to $2200.

Laptops for the people with a class apart. With all the standard and advanced features in these notebooks, they cost above US$2200.

Performance test of laptops:

Notebooks can be tested on the basis of certain benchmarks such as Multimedia content creation 2003 and Business Winston 2002. These tests determine the performance ability of different notebooks with regard to regular productivity applications and multimedia content application.

Similarly, 3D Mark05 and 3D Mark06 are used as standards to measure the gaming and graphic potential of different notebooks.

Likewise, PC Mark05 is taken as a yardstick to test various components of notebooks such as hard-disk general usage, multithreading, web-page rendering, file decryption and 3D pixel shader.

Moreover, the battery back-up and wireless connectivity can be tested using Battery Mark02 and QCheck as the benchmark.

Finally, Vista Compatibility Check can be undertaken to test if the notebooks have Vista-readiness. Under this test, the performance of the laptops is assessed on the basis of Vista drivers and Vista upgradeability.

Features:

When it comes to features, the list seems endless. Some expensive notebooks have the most advanced features such as built-in webcams, fingerprint readers, TPM and so on. So far as the features go, they can be divided into five different categories, such as:

Physical - Screen size and weight of the notebook

Connectivity - Bluetooth version 1/2, infrared, MMC reader, S-Video, DVI port, FireWire. The number and type of USB ports and PCMCIA slots.

Components - Type of optical drives, whether the notebook has a DVD combo, a CD-RW or a multi-recorder DVD-RW. The hard-drive capacity and any additional component such as wireless optical mouse or an MMC adapter.

Software - Software have always been an essential part of the package. These include recovery CDs, driver CDs, OSes, etc.

Protection - All types of protection available in a notebook, be it a finger-print reader, BIOS level HDD protection, touch-pad lock, TPM, or even rescue option available at the time of boot up.

Pricing and Warranty:

All notebooks ranging from $1200 to $4500 offer warranty of 1 year and some laptops have the option of additional extendable warranty.

So, the above discussed comprehensive analysis and performance tests will definitely help those who are planning to buy a laptop.

Notebook For The Casual User

The notebook has a great deal of features, but what you use it for greatly affects the type that you should purchase. The device is designed to be compact, transportable and still provide all the technological requirements that suit your needs. Certain elements affect these notebook features a great deal. Many are unnecessary if you want to use the device only for fun or for occasional use, and others are also essential. It is important that you know what you need so that you can make sure your notebook is a sound investment.

A recreational notebook user wants a device to be able to edit video, play DVDs, access the internet for browse and downloading games. For these requirements an internal CD/DVD will be required. These can be bought as an accessory, but if entertainment is the key requirement then it makes sense to buy one with inbuilt capabilities. This will provide instant access, making the device more readily accessible and less cumbersome for the recreational user. The inbuilt DVD player will make the notebook heavier.

The size of the notebook screen will affect the quality of the entertainment used. A larger screen is required to make the image clearer and more enjoyable. This will make the device bulkier and heavier, but if it used for recreational reasons, then this is seldom a problem. A fifteen to seventeen inch screen is perfect for the recreational user. This also means that the keyboard will be larger which can assist with gaming in terms of better and easier access to controls. The graphics card needs to be able to produce a good quality image on these screens, and so choose a notebook compatible 3d option. If it is inbuilt, check to make sure it is top of the range to avoid disappointment.

Any notebook has built in memory that can easily cope with an excess of word processing and document creation and storage. However, if you are using it for entertainment, then the size of the memory will be important. The bigger the memory; the best quality product you will receive. The memory affects picture quality, game choice, graphics, and game speed. If any of these are a requirement then you should choose a notebook with maximum memory to get the best possible results. If you are using a video card that says `Shared Video Memory` then this means that it uses some memory from your notebook. Small amount of memory also restricts the number of colours available and so again it will produce an image of low quality.

Downloading films and games from the internet require good hard disk space also. Many games are multi faceted and so require regular saving. These store lots of information including graphics, and so try to keep the amount to a minimum to get the best performance from your notebook. Games on disc use less memory, and so combine the use of the two for better variety. Add and remove downloaded films as required to get the best from your device. This is also important for the battery life.

Using a notebook recreationally runs the battery down much more quickly than for business use. The more information stored, the more output is expected, and so the battery will take the strain. Keeping a neat and well organised notebook will ensure you get optimum performance.

How To Overcome Some Disadvantages Of Low-Cost Notebooks

With all the powerful features come built in with the modern notebook computers, they are threatening the very existence of their desktop alternatives. The modern consumers have practically run out of good reasons to buy desktop computers as they can find all the essential features available with the notebook with no dramatic difference in the prices. Well, despite how close the notebook computers have come to their desktop replacements, some of us still need one or more features which may not be found in the notebooks.

However, this is not a very good reason why you should buy a desktop computer while you can get the same features and even more in a notebook at the same price. I have seen many users complain about the small screen size, absence of DVD burners, and other stuff like that which some standard low-cost notebooks might not have. However, the good news is you can always upgrade your notebook with any accessories you want. Let`s talk about a bit about the common features people have been heard complaining about and how to solve these problems easily.

DVD Burner: Some people crib that the notebook doesn`t have a DVD burner. If you are one of them then you can buy an external DVD burner and connect it with your notebook via the USB port. You will be ambushed with a galaxy of DVD burners; however, you can count on Hewlett-Packard DC4000 External DVD RW Writer. It can convert video from different formats such as Betamax, Digital8, VHS and Hi8. It also works as any other standard DVD writer and burns music, data, photos to DVD and CD. While taking a DVD burner take care of the compatibility of the accessory with your notebook.

Flat-LCD Screen: Few prefer watching their favourite action flicks on your notebook; blame it on the small screen. Take home a Flat- LCD screen monitor and watch your favourite movies in the virtual theatre surroundings. You can search and check for different Flat screen LCDs available and compare their prices. Also check for the contrast ratio, resolution and scanning frequency.

Musical Experience: Listening to music on the tinny notebook speakers is hardly interesting to any music lover. If you are suffering from this problem, buy your notebook a pair of speakers, preferably a model that comes with 5.1 speaker system with Dolby Digital and DTS Hardware decoding. It will offer you superlative sound quality both for listening to your favourite music and watching your favourite movies on your notebook.

Notebook Keyboard: Using the keyboard of the notebook can be tiring and painful for your fingers. How often have you ended up with your finger experiencing an unusual pressure? Even the notebook users may have experienced the generated heat on their hand. An additional keyboard is the best solution for it. You can enjoy the functionality from a wireless keyboard with a separate media pad for accessing. The keyboard combo is also available with a wireless optical mouse have great sensitivity of movements. Keyboards of varied types are available; just you need to find the best for you.

USB Mobile Port Replicator: Of course you are taking a notebook to take it with you wherever you go. But where are you going to plug in all these accessories if you are taking it to some other place. You can`t afford every time to plug them out while moving and plug in again while using. You can sort the problem out with an USB mobile port replicator. Whatever you need to plug into your laptop you can plug into it and plug in the USB mobile port replicator to your notebook.
