How Airplane Fires Are Started

Usually when a home or other building catches on fire, if there is anyone inside they stand a pretty good chance of escaping. Even when someone gets trapped in burning buildings, firefighters can many times get in and perform some really heroic rescues. It is not that often that tragic deaths occur because of house fires, but they do happen. At least with these types of fires, people are already on the ground and have a reasonable possibility of surviving.

One place that can catch fire where the people on board might not have a great a chance for survival is on an airplane. People travel by plane by the millions everyday and it is not often that a fire does happen on board, but when one does occur, you can bet it causes instant fear and panic. Even a small fire of some kind is enough to cause complete pandemonium on an in flight airplane. Can you imagine knowing the airplane you are traveling in at no telling how many thousand feet is on fire and you have no way to get off?

This has been a tragedy that has happened many times as infrequent as it is. Bombs being planted on board by terrorists or just an unstable person have been the cause of crashes. Then there are also fires on board that have been caused by lightning strikes or on board electrical problems. What ever the reason the fire gets started, the real problem is can the pilots get the plane down safely in an emergency landing?

It is sometimes possible for the fire to be put out and an emergency landing not have to take place. This has also been the case in many airplane fires. Sometimes there is no fire on board the plane until the pilot is forced to make an emergency or compromised landing. Sometimes the plane is just fine flying in the air, but landing in bad weather or with faulty landing gear can cause the plane to explode and burst into planes on impact.

These last few minutes when the passengers know that there will be a problem landing must be so terrifying. Knowing that the chances of landing safely are small and that the possibility or wrecking the aircraft and having it come apart and possibly burst into flames has to be horrible. This is exactly what has happened in many emergency landings and there is not a thing the passengers on board can go except be ready to escape the airplane as soon as the crash is over.

Don’t Let the Airlines Takeoff with Your Money - Compare Flight Prices

Filed under: Air Travel — zachthompson @ 12:00 am

When you want to compare flight prices, this is a true sign of a being a savvy and concerned consumer. The willingness to compare prices before you make a purchase is one of the first steps it takes in order to get the right purchase for your needs. Flight prices vary depending on a wide variety of factors. Knowing how to select the right flight when there are so many to choose from gives you an excellent advantage when it comes to purchasing the ticket or tickets that are exactly what you are looking for. To compare flight prices, keep in mind the variety of factors listed below, then balance them against one another to decide what is most important to you.

Airline. Different airlines charge different rates, and this depends on a wide variety of factors. When you compare flight prices, you will find that the cost of a ticket can vary depending on the airline name itself. Some airlines have better reputation for everything from customers service to maintenance standards. If you are not concerned with customer service, then the lower priced airlines may be fine for you; if you are one who worries particularly about flight safety, then when you compare flight prices you may want to also look into a particular airline’s record with regards to mechanical compliance and passenger safety.

Plane. The different type of plane you fly on can also have a different impact on the price of the ticket. Larger planes cost more to operate, while smaller planes require less fuel. However, larger planes hold more passengers, which means the cost of operation is divided between more people. The age of the plane also affects ticket price because newer planes come with more amenities (such as better entertainment equipment and more comfortable seats, for example).

Departure and Destination. Depending on the city you are departing from and the city you are going to, when you compare flight prices, you may find that certain cities are more expensive to fly to. Cities that are more major with regards to airline flights may be more affordable, while cities off the beaten path can cost a bit more to get to simply because there are less flights heading to those specific destinations.

Flight Route. You will find, when you compare flight prices, that the route of a flight has a significant impact on the price of a ticket for that flight. For example, the more direct of a flight you want, the more expensive that ticket is likely to be. Less direct flights, however, do tend to be more affordable. This is largely because the direct flights are in higher demand, so airlines can get by with charging higher prices for these flights. However, keep in mind that the more connections and layovers you have, the greater risk you run of experiencing delays (and thus missing connecting flights) or of having your luggage be lost.

Ultimately, the choices presented after you compare flight prices are up to you. You can decide which factors are most important for your specific needs. From airline and plane to cities and travel routes, the information you unearth when you compare flight prices will give you the tools you need to choose the right flight for you.

Common International Air Travel Rules

Filed under: Air Travel — rdokoye @ 12:00 am

Everyday, in the United States, a large number of individuals, couples, and families travel by way of an airplane. Out of all of those travellers, a decent number of them are travelling overseas or to a foreign country. As international travel continues to increase in popularity, it is likely that the numbers will continue to rise. In fact, there is even a good chance that you may make the decision to travel to another country. If so, it is advised that you formularize yourself with the international air travel rules.

When it comes to international air travel rules, there are many travellers who automatically get confused. This is because not many people know that the rules for international air travel are different than the rules for domestic air travel. In reality, they aren’t exactly the same, but they aren’t that much different either. Despite the similarities, it is still advised that you place a focus on international air travel, especially since you will be travelling internationally.

As previously mentioned, you will find that a number of the air travel rules are similar between domestic and international travel. One of those rules is the airport screening process. In all airports, even if they are not classified as an international airport, passengers will need to pass through the appropriate airport security checkpoints. This screening process includes the close examination of your checked baggage. Unlike in the past, now almost all airlines thoroughly inspect checked baggage looking for explosive, flammable, or illegal items.

Since a large number of international airports not only offer international flights, but domestic flights as well, intentional passengers are not always separated from domestic ones. Essentially, this means that the passenger screening procedures, as well as the screening for all luggages will be the same. All flyers are advised to remove any of their accessories, which may set of the metal detectors, as well as their shoes. Your shoes will be sent through the x-ray machine. This is done to ensure that there are not explosives or other dangerous materials hidden in them.

One of the few differences that you will see, between domestic air travel and international air travel, has to do with the first check-in. When you first arrive at the airport, you will need to approach the airline counter to register yourself. This is also where your checked luggage will be examined and processed for the trip. On domestic flights, passengers only need to supply a picture id. This identification is usually a government issued identification card or a driver’s license. If you are planning on travelling internationally, you will need to supply additional proof of identification.

The proofs of identification that you will need will all depend on the airport in which you are leaving from and the airport that you will be arriving at. If you are required to show more than a picture id, you may need to bring your birth certificate, your passport, your visa, or your certificate of citizenship. Although your first impulse may be to bring them all, just incase, you will want to refrain from doing so. Unless absolutely necessarily, you will want to keep these important personal documents safe at home.

The above mentioned international air travel rules and procedures are just a few of the many that you may be required to follow. If and when you are unsure about a particular rule, it is advised that you seek professional assistance. That assistance should either come directly from an international airport or an international airline.

Heathrow Airport; Always Accommodating The Largest Aircraft

Filed under: Air Travel — prettyone @ 12:00 am

In the UK, the largest and busiest airport is London’s Heathrow; even in the world it is considered to be the third busiest and in terms of international passengers, the busiest. Because of the numbers of international passengers travelling through, the site is a place where it is possible to see people of nearly every nationality in the world. Understandably companies have not missed the profit making opportunities of such a cultural melting pot, taking advantage by building shops, car hire desks, restaurants and cafes within the terminals.

As with the majority of airports in the UK, Heathrow can trace its first use to the military. Unlike many sites however, Heathrow was being used during the First World War as an airbase that predominantly tested new developments on a variety of aircraft. At this stage the majority of the civilian aviation needs of the capital were catered for at the Croydon site. Now Croydon is a small and unused airfield, during the twenties and thirties however it was one of, if not the, major UK airport. After the Second World War however Croydon lost its position of primacy, and instead the Heathrow site took the number one position. Heathrow was heavily developed during the war years and hence, once the conflict was over, was more suited to the large planes that had been developed.

Heathrow has always been at the forefront of catering for the largest civilian planes in existence. During the fifties the Queen laid the first slabs of the new runway, built to cater for the new jet planes that would so rapidly change the aviation industry. A new runway meant that a new terminal had to be built to accommodate larger passenger numbers. At this stage however most designers believed that air travel would be reserved for the wealthy, subsequently no provisions were made for car parking as it was believed that most passengers would be chauffeured to the airport. Today however it is different, car parks at Heathrow are massive and the large number of hire car companies proves that air travel is now the pursuit of the masses.

The seventies saw further development of Heathrow, once again the runways were extended to accommodate the huge Boeing 747s that were now traversing the world. In addition however the terminal was further developed with covered runways and docking legs in order for passengers to have a stress free transition from terminal to plane. Also during this period Heathrow improved its transport links to the centre of London. A station was built that connected directly to the London Underground while additionally an overhead rail link that pulls into Paddington Station was also built.

With the introduction of the new gargantuan Airbus A380, Heathrow has once again been at the forefront of accommodating the largest passenger planes. Part of this accommodation has meant an expansion of the terminals and docking ports. As well as this however, recently the site has seen a fifth terminal being added; this terminal will purely service the aircraft flying for British Airways. Naturally this new terminal will contain all of the shops, restaurants, and car hire desks that come as standard in the modern airport.

Current estimates place the average annual passenger numbers at around the seventy million mark. This is approximately double the number of any other airport in the UK. Understandably, the airports position of primacy is somewhat assured. However, the airport executives will have to remain up to date on aircraft developments in order to cater for the largest and most modern aircraft.

Air travel expert Thomas Pretty looks into how car hire Heathrow airport services have been instrumental in the site’s development.
